INTERESTING FAN COLLECTION FEATURED AT OROVILLE'S HISTORIC LOTT HOME

OROVILLE, CA – June 8, 2012 – An incredible display of period hand fans are currently being showcased at the historic C.F. Lott Home in Oroville. The origin of hand fans can be traced as far back as 4,000 years ago in Egypt. Hand fans were once seen as a sacred instrument used in religious ceremonies and were also symbols of power. There is even an entire culture of hand fans, such as, if a woman was fanning herself with he left hand, it meant, “Don’t flirt with that woman” or fanning slowly meant “I am married.” A fan placed near the heart meant “You have won my love.” As the years went by and the roles of women changed after World War I the hand held fans began to diminish. However, during the 1920’s they took on a new life and began to be used for advertising. The display at the Lott Home contains fans of all eras and purposes. Stop by and visit the display and let your imagination wonder, or simply ask one of the costumed docents at the Lott Home about the fan collection.

Visit the Lott Home which is located in Sank Park at 1067 Montgomery Street, Oroville, on Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays from 11:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. and also be treated to a captivating history of the Victorian home, circa 1856, presented by costumed museum docents. Period displays change several times a year so you’ll want to see the hand fans before they are whisked away.

The City of Oroville is also offering Museum Passports that are good for one year, allow the holder and up to three guests to visit not only the C.F. Lott Home but Bolt’s Antique Tool Museum, the Chinese Temple & Museum Complex, the Pioneer History Museum and the Feather River Nature Center. Questions regarding the display, the C.F. Lott Home, and the Museum Passport program may be directed to the City of Oroville at (530) 538-2415 or by visiting the City’s website: www.cityoforoville.org
