Description: The fundamental reason for the existance of this classification is to participate directly in the review of building and development plans for the compliance with state and local fire codes and other permit requirements, to conduct highly technical fire prevention activities, and to provide highly technical staff assistance.
The Fire Protection Engineer is a single position professional classification in the Fire Prevention Bureau of the Fire Department with the responsibility for perfroming complex plan review, fire & life safety inspections, and fire prevention activities. It is distinguished from the classification of Fire Marshall in that the Fire Marshall is the Fire Prevention Division head and the Fire Protection Engineer works under the Fire Marshall's direction. The Fire Protection Engineer, for the purposes of this classification, also performs field work typical of a Fire Inspector as a portion of the required duties.
