NORTHWEST S.P.C.A.

Can you adopt me?       In 1954 the City of Oroville created by resolution the position of Poundmaster. The Poundmaster's duties were to enforce state laws and local ordinances as they pertain to animals, monitor the licensing of animals, and impounding stray animals. By ordinance, the supervision and direction of the Poundmaster falls upon the Chief of Police. Beginning in the 1980s and continuing to this day, these responsibilities are contracted with Northwest S.P.C.A.

      Northwest S.P.C.A. provides full range animal control services including; investigating complaints of dogs running at large, aggressive animals, animal bites, investigating nuisance complaints including barking dogs, dogs chasing passerby's, cats destroying property, dead animal pickup, animal rescues, pickup of injured and or stray animals and wildlife. These Animal Control Officers also enforce state laws and local city ordinances as they relate to animal issues. The Northwest S.P.C.A. also operates a shelter housing impounded animals and/or animals surrendered by citizens. In 2002 the Northwest S.P.C.A. responded to 1,747 calls for service.

      Additional services provided by the Northwest S.P.C.A. include, Can you adopt me? humane programs such as: pet facilitated therapy visits to area nursing homes and hospitals, humane education speakers which are available to area schools and community groups, pet tattooing, and the assistance to low income citizens with pet spaying and neutering.
